Think of this as an old naturalist’s field guide. Understanding anatomy explains behavior; once we see how they are built, their actions in the hive make sense. Use the illustrations as your primary teacher; the text is here just to guide your eye. There is no need to memorize everything—simply enjoy getting to know the worker bee.

The Sensory Head

The head is the bee’s sensory hub, housing the brain, eyes, and antennae. It allows the bee to navigate the landscape, communicate with sisters, and locate flowers.

Flight and Tools

  • The thorax is the engine room, packed with flight muscles. Here you will find the legs and wings. Bees have two pairs of wings that hook together for flight using tiny hooks called hamuli. On the hind legs, look for the ‘pollen basket’ or corbicula.

Abdomen, Wax and Sting

Anatomy Notes

The abdomen holds the bee’s life-support systems. Inside are the digestive organs and scent glands. On the underside, worker bees produce tiny wax scales from special glands. At the tip sits the sting, used by workers to defend the colony.

Good to Know

Honey bees beat their wings around 230 times every second, allowing them to hover, fly backwards and carry surprisingly heavy loads of nectar and pollen.
