Managing the Beekeeping Year

Reading the bees, the weather and the land together.

Beekeeping does not follow fixed dates on a wall calendar. A cold spring may hold the bees back for weeks, while a single warm day in February can trigger the first collection of pollen from hazel and willow. To follow the year is to follow the flowering of the land and the needs of the cluster.

This series provides the framework for building your own local beekeeping calendar. By reading the weather, the forage and the colony together, you will learn to use the calendar only as a guide, while allowing the bees and the land to dictate exactly when you act.

SERIES INTRODUCTION

A Year Guided by Observation

The beekeeping year does not follow fixed dates on a wall calendar. A cold spring may hold the bees back for weeks, while a single warm day in February can trigger the first collection of pollen from hazel and willow. To follow the year is to follow the flowering of the land and the needs of the cluster.

The calendar can tell you where to begin looking, but the colony must tell you what to do next. By reading the weather, the forage and the colony together, you will learn to use the calendar only as a guide, while allowing the bees and the land to dictate exactly when you act.

Through this series, you will learn to:

  • Understand how colonies adjust their growth based on local forage.
  • Read the signs of colony health and nutritional needs through every phase.
  • Predict swarm windows before queen cells appear.
  • Determine the precise timing for spring expansion and winter preparation.
  • Manage space in alignment with the main nectar flow.
  • Build a local apiary record that becomes your own seasonal field guide.

The Three Clocks of Beekeeping

Success in the apiary requires synchronising three distinct natural rhythms that move at different speeds throughout the year.

The Weather Clock

The fastest and most unpredictable rhythm. Temperature, wind, and rain dictate when the bees can fly and when the beekeeper can safely open the hive. The weather clock can accelerate the spring build-up or halt it entirely.

The Forage Clock

The rhythm of the land. It begins with hazel and willow, moves through the fruit blossom and oilseed rape, into the main summer flow, and ends with ivy. This clock determines the nutritional resources available to the colony.

The Colony Clock

The internal biological rhythm of the bees. The three-week cycle from egg to emerged worker, the expansion of the brood nest, and the seasonal shift from short-lived summer bees to long-lived winter bees.

The calendar suggests what might happen. The bees tell you what is happening.

WINTER

A time of cluster protection and store monitoring. The bees are inactive externally but deep in their survival rhythm. Ensure hives are secure against winter gales and predators.

Observation prompts:
  • Are hive roofs secure after high winds?
  • Is there sufficient weight in the hive for the cluster size?
  • Are the bees flying on mild, sunny days to cleanse?

SUMMER

The height of the nectar flow. Management focuses on space and the prevention of swarming. Ensure the colony has sufficient supers to store the season's surplus.

Observation prompts:
  • How intense is the forage activity at the entrance?
  • Are supers filling and being capped effectively?
  • Are there signs of congestion or queen cell production?
THE SEASONAL PATHWAY

The Beekeeping Year at a Glance

The beekeeping year is continuous rather than a set of fixed monthly tasks. Use these seasonal stages as a guide, then adjust them according to the weather, local forage and each individual colony.

Seasonal management must never rely on dates alone. Follow current bee-health guidance, product instructions and local conditions when assessing pests, disease or treatment requirements.

SPRING

The catalyst for expansion. As forage increases, the queen expands the brood nest. This is the most critical time for health checks and assessing protein (pollen) availability.

Observation prompts:
  • Are workers returning with diverse pollen colours?
  • Is the brood nest expanding in line with current forage?
  • Is there enough empty comb for the increasing population?

AUTUMN

Preparation for the long cluster. Focus shifts to varroa management and ensuring the colony has high-quality stores to last until the first spring forage appears.

Observation prompts:
  • Is the colony physically strong and disease-free?
  • Are there sufficient capped honey stores for the winter?
  • Are entrance blocks reduced to prevent robbing?

The notebooks in the apiary are not just for recording honey yields or mite treatments. They are a record of a dialogue between the keeper and the hive. By noting the precise day a specific forage source opens, or the exact temperament of a colony during a thunderous afternoon, we begin to see the invisible threads that connect the bees to their environment.

These field notes represent years of standing still, watching the entrance, and learning to wait until the bees are ready to tell their story. They reflect a philosophy of beekeeping where the human is the observer first, and the manager second.

PRACTICAL LEARNING

Build Your Own Local Calendar

While a generic beekeeping calendar provides a useful baseline, it cannot account for the specific microclimate of your own valley or the particular forage available within two miles of your hives. The most valuable tool you can possess is a calendar built from your own observations over multiple seasons.

  • First sightings of snowdrops and crocuses
  • First hazel catkins releasing pollen
  • The arrival of the first bumblebee queens
  • Night-time temperature trends in early Spring
  • Dates of the 'June Gap' in your specific area
  • Flowering dates of local lime or chestnut trees
  • Ivy flowering onset in your neighborhood
  • The date of the first and last killing frosts
  • Maximum and minimum colony weight trends
  • First drone sightings in the Spring
Let the Land Help You Read the Season

Phenology is the study of periodic plant and animal life cycle events as they are influenced by seasonal and interannual variations in climate. For the beekeeper, watching when the cherry blossoms or the hawthorn breaks bud is far more accurate than reading a date on a calendar. These natural markers are the true signals of when your colonies will begin to expand or prepare for winter.

Over three to five years, these records move from being simple notes to becoming a practical, expert guide to beekeeping exactly where you live.
