Reading the Season, Not Just the Calendar
How weather, forage and colony condition influence timing.
A calendar can remind you what may be coming, but it cannot tell you exactly what is happening in a particular hive. A cold spring may delay colony growth. A spell of warm weather can bring it forward. Flowers may be open but producing little nectar, while two colonies standing beside one another can develop at very different speeds. Good timing begins with reading three things together: the weather, the available forage and the condition of the colony.

The Three Clocks of Beekeeping
The beekeeping year is continuous, but it does not move at exactly the same pace every year. Before deciding what a colony needs, consider three different clocks. None of them should be read in isolation.
1. The Weather Clock
The internal temperature of a brood nest is remarkably stable, but the weather outside dictates when the bees can fly, when they can forage, and when it is safe for you to inspect. A warm February might trigger early egg laying, but if it is followed by a freezing March, the colony may struggle to keep that brood warm. Ask yourself:
- Is it warm enough for the bees to fly freely?
- Is it too windy or wet for a thorough inspection?
- Has there been a prolonged cold spell that might have slowed development or exhausted stores?
2. The Forage Clock
Flowers are the most visible indicator of the season. The 'June Gap' refers to a period between the spring blossoms and summer wild flowers, but its timing varies by weeks depending on the year. Observation of local flora—from the first snowdrop to the last ivy—is essential. Observations:
- Are the bees returning with full pollen baskets? What color is the pollen?
- Is the main local honey crop (e.g., Oilseed Rape or Hawthorn) currently in bloom?
- Are the bees searching frantically or flying with purpose?
3. The Colony Clock
The most important clock is inside the hive. The physiological state of the colony determines their needs. A strong colony with six frames of brood has very different requirements and risks than a smaller nucleus colony nearby. They will react to weather and forage at different speeds. Considerations:
- Does the population size match the available space?
- Are they building new comb or preparing to swarm?
- Do they have enough food to survive the next week if the weather turns?
Manage the colony in front of you, not the colony described in a book and not the hive standing beside it.

Look Before You Lift
You can learn a great deal about a colony without ever opening the roof. In fact, a skilled beekeeper can often decide if an inspection is even necessary just by watching the entrance for five minutes. Entrance Observations:
- Pollen: Heavy pollen loads suggest a queen is present and laying.
- Orientation: Young bees hovering in front of the hive are likely taking their first flights.
- Defense: Are guards alert or is there fighting (robbing) at the entrance?
- Speed: Bees arriving 'heavy' and landing with a thud suggests a good nectar flow.
Do not diagnose a colony from entrance activity alone. Use these observations to form better questions.
Good to Know
Try to watch the entrance at different times of day. A hive that looks quiet at 9 AM might be a hive of activity by noon. Understanding the 'normal' rhythm of each colony helps you spot when something is 'abnormal'.
Should I Inspect Today?
Opening a hive is a major disruption. It takes time for the bees to restore the temperature and reorganize. Ask yourself these four questions before you light the smoker:
- What is my specific objective for this inspection?
- Do the weather conditions (temperature, wind, rain) allow for a safe opening?
- Does the external activity suggest the colony is in a state where a disturbance is wise?
- If I find something unexpected, do I have the equipment and time to deal with it now?
If the answer to any of these is 'no', postpone the inspection. If you have an urgent problem but aren't comfortable opening up, seek help from a more experienced beekeeper first.
The Same Date Can Require Different Decisions
A Mild March Afternoon
Temperatures rise to 14°C. The first heavy loads of orange-red gorse pollen are coming in. The bees are active, but the colony is small and fragile. It is a day for a quick look at stores, not a full brood inspection.
A Cold, Wet Spell in May
The Hawthorne is out, but it is 10°C and raining. Swarm season is starting. The calendar says 'inspect every 7 days', but the weather says 'stay closed'. Opening the hive now risks chilling the brood and making the bees defensive.
Flowers Everywhere, but Little Activity
The fields are yellow with oilseed rape, but the wind is a biting North-Easterly. The flowers are open, but the forage clock is paused because the ground is too dry for nectar flow. The bees are staying home despite the dates.
Two Hives, Two Different Seasons
One colony is booming and needs another super. The other is sluggish and hasn't expanded. Even though it is June 15th for both, one hive is in 'high summer' mode while the other is still stuck in 'early spring'.
Build Your Own Local Calendar
The best way to stop relying on generic dates is to record what happens in your own garden or apiary year after year. Focus your records on the alignment of the three clocks: First observation of pollens (Hazel, Gorse, Willow), the date fruit blossom opens, nectar flow starting temperatures, and dates of forage gaps like the 'June Gap'. The most useful beekeeping calendar is one informed by the bees themselves.
